Sarah Breedlove known as Madam C. J. Walker, was an African-American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and a political and social activist. Walker was considered the wealthiest African-American businesswoman and wealthiest self-made woman in America at the time of her death in 1919.

Franchises with the Walker beauty company allowed thousands of black women to launch their own businesses, despite the restrictions of segregation. Similarly, Walker’s beauty schools gave black women access to professional training for gainful employment.

This design is a reproduction of this sign which indicated you were an authorized agent with the Madam C.J. Walker Company. The sign was considered a symbol of freedom and opportunity for many African American women.
