This item is part of our Radical Roots series, an ongoing series that honors the legacies of resistance, community care, and liberation movements that have shaped our world. Each collection within the series is curated by organizers, artists, educators, and cultural workers whose work is rooted in these traditions, offering their perspective on the texts, images, and histories that continue to inspire them.

About the Curator:
Maori Karmael Holmes is an American filmmaker, curator, cultural worker, and the chief executive and artistic officer of BlackStar Projects, which produces the annual BlackStar Film Festival.

"I was rather obsessed with Barbies as a young girl and it was a confusing passion for someone also interested in both De La Soul and the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, but I read this book dozens of times and referenced it on more than one occasion as I wrote papers about the impact of Barbie as a cultural icon in elementary school, high school and college. On some level I have always been fascinated about the history of culture, Barbie included. This book shaped me in providing a serious take on a topic I think many people glossed over and overlooked." — MKH
