This item is part of our Radical Roots series, an ongoing series that honors the legacies of resistance, community care, and liberation movements that have shaped our world. Each collection within the series is curated by organizers, artists, educators, and cultural workers whose work is rooted in these traditions, offering their perspective on the texts, images, and histories that continue to inspire them.
About the Curator: Maori Karmael Holmes is an American filmmaker, curator, cultural worker, and the chief executive and artistic officer of BlackStar Projects, which produces the annual BlackStar Film Festival.
"It is hard to choose just one book by bell hooks, but this one was one of the first I was introduced to in my freshman year of college, and it also made me interested in studying film as history. I’d already been interested in both film and history and realized I could bring the two together, and also think through larger concerns about life (what I would later learn as intersectionality) was transformative." — MKH
